It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Vuyo Brown and she’s here once again to remind us she has not forgotten. She teams up with another amazing singer and songwriter, Tariro NeGitare to give us a remake of her song titled “Areka” from her 2018 album, Grace Fulfilled.
This one of the most beautiful songs I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. I love the message behind it and the instruments in the song. It reminds me of the late Oliver Mtukudzi and Chiwoniso Maraire, two of the county’s finest musicians, whose music also had a touch of that African, indigenous sound. The song having that indigenous sound doesn’t come as as a surprise as Tariro Negitares’ music often has that element.
“Areka” is a shona word that means an ark. An ark represents a place of safety, if you recall the story of Noah and the Ark, the animals that went into the ark and Noah’s family were all protected from the flood. The message of the song is the same, the ark represents a place of safety and that safety is found in salvation. Vuyo tells us that she’s been on this world on her own and she didn’t have anyone, until she met Jesus, her life has been changed. She has found peace, joy and hope that is found in Salvation. And this is all she has been looking for.
The artists wish the same for everyone else hence the lyrics :
“Pinda muareka tiende kunekuponeswa ikoko
Pinda muareka tiende kunehupenyu utsva ikoko”
When interpreted, the message simply says get into the ark and your life will be changed.
We hope you’ll love this song the way we did. The song is available on all streaming platforms and is available for free if you contact Vuyo Brown on social media.
