University Prep: Get ready with me

Surrounding yourself with positive influences helps you stay focused and aligned with your goals.

Published on

One conversation I wish I had before starting university is how to best prepare for varsity life as a girl from eKasi. When I finally reached that phase, I was overwhelmed and confused. I had no clear knowledge of what I needed to bring, what was appropriate to wear, or what to avoid. There was simply too much important information I lacked, and I had no one to guide me except for some of my mentors and older sisters. Even they had to seek tips from others and figure things out for themselves. In this article, I want to unpack some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way, lessons that are still unfolding because my journey isn’t over yet. For example, we’ll explore whether a new wardrobe is truly necessary when starting university, among other essential topics.

Choosing a University

First things first: choosing a university. For me, the internet was a tremendous help. I researched the best universities in the country and became particularly interested in the debate club. I was fortunate enough to attend an open debate tournament once, where I saw Tanaka D Mangachena and his partner Thando debate that immediately caught my attention. Curious, I asked around, found their university on social media, and discovered it was already among my top three choices. I was determined to attend there, so I began the application process.

Applying to university is quite straightforward, especially during intake season when information is abundant. Universities advertise online, and many allow applications through their websites. Typically, you’ll need certified copies of your results, your identification documents, and any other information the university requests. Some institutions also charge an application fee around $20, or its equivalent in the local currency. However, if you’re applying online, be vigilant of online scams. Always verify the sources and ensure you’re dealing with legitimate university representatives before sending any money or personal information.

Preparing for Admission and Accommodation

Once your application is successful, it’s time to prepare for the move. You might wonder what you’ll need, especially regarding accommodation. At Midlands State University, for example, students are automatically assigned on-campus accommodation if they are in Level 1. This was extremely helpful because it provided a safe environment and an opportunity to familiarise myself with the campus. Living on campus allowed me to explore the available facilities, scout for places that suited my taste and budget, and learn about affordable resources nearby. Knowing you have safe, affordable accommodation within your budget significantly reduces stress and makes it easier to focus on adjusting to university life. It’s one less thing to worry about, allowing you to enjoy the experience more fully.

Packing and Preparing for the Environment

Before leaving for university, it’s essential to consider the climate. Find out the typical temperatures and pack warm, cosy clothes and blankets. Carry any necessary medication, as adjusting to a new environment can sometimes lead to illness. Always boil water before drinking or opt for bottled water to avoid health issues. Preparing these basics ensures your health and safety during your initial days in a new place.

Building Friendships

Next comes the journey of friendship. I am fortunate to have always believed that God has chosen my friends for me from a young age. Friends are incredibly important to me because I believe the company we keep influences our greatness, either elevating us or holding us back. I went to school with my cousin sister, and the other two ladies who are now considered family were placed in our room by circumstance, since then we have a bond that is as tight as a knot . God’s wonders. However, everyone’s experience is different. It’s crucial to be mindful about the friends you make. If your friends are primarily interested in partying, drugs, or avoiding school work and neglect to participate in clubs or academic activities, you might want to reconsider your group. Surrounding yourself with positive influences helps you stay focused and aligned with your goals.

The Big Question: Do You Need a New Wardrobe?

Now, here’s the question many students ask, “Is it necessary to buy new clothes for university?” My answer is a resounding NO. At university, no one really cares about your wardrobe, especially if you mind your own business and stay true to yourself. University is a microcosm of society, where everyone is trying to find their niche.

Personally, I never bought new clothes for school. I still wear the same styles I did before, whether it’s plaiting my hair in freehand or wearing clothes that make me comfortable. Your signature style or personality might be your brand, and if that’s the case, go all out, meaning if you do love fashion and that’s your brand, well build it. Don’t let anyone demotivate you from expressing yourself authentically. For those who aren’t concerned with fashion trends, it’s perfectly okay to stick to what makes you feel comfortable. You’d be surprised many students at varsity are just like you, chasing different goals and passions.

Lifestyle and Peer Pressure

One essential topic to discuss is lifestyle and peer pressure. It’s a common misconception that peer pressure doesn’t affect you truthfully, it does, whether positively or negatively. The university is a melting pot of students from all walks of life: some drive fancy cars and live on res, others reside in lavish houses, while many are just scraping by, sometimes unable to afford even a pizza without risking their resources for school supplies.

When you’re just leaving high school, this diversity can be confusing. You might wonder whether to join the partying scene or stay focused on your goals. My advice is to observe and wait before making decisions. Spend your first semester watching everything unfold. Weigh the pros and cons, and decide whether to succumb to positive or negative peer pressure. From my perspective, choosing positive influences has made my university experience much more fulfilling. Sometimes, watching from a distance is the wisest move and I honestly have to thank my sisters/friends for this, they made it so much easier.

Embracing the University Experience

Overall, university is one of the most transformative experiences you will have. It’s a time to learn independence, develop new skills, and understand the consequences of impulsiveness, whether it’s how you manage your money or how you prioritise your tasks.

University is also incredibly fun. It’s a space where you discover more about yourself because you’re free to express who you truly are without judgment. It’s a roller-coaster ride filled with challenges and joys alike. If you make the most of it, these years will be some of the best of your life.
