I’ll tell my aunt about you so that they know about you. In African tradition when a young woman has found a suitor she is obligated to tell her aunt about the relationship to vet them and in terms of showing that they’re serious about a new phase in their life.

  In ‘Zizobuya’ Awa creates a narrative arc that exposes the insidious nature of domestic violence. The journey from hopeful anticipation to heartbreaking betrayal is laid bare with raw honesty. She says, “Bengithi ng’thole isthandwa kwadlula amalanga ngabona ukuthi hay’bo akusekho mnandi ekhaya kwashona ilanga unyamalala.” I thought I found the love of my life until time passed and you wouldn’t come home.

The lyrics are poignant and thought-provoking. Awa’s ability to intertwine traditional African values with contemporary issues is commendable. She challenges societal norms and empowers survivors to reclaim their lives.

“Manje awusaqhambi lamanga ngingakubuza ung’faka isandla” meaning you don’t even lie to me anymore when I ask you, you hit me. This is when the abuser doesn’t even bother lying and just resorts to violence. She really breaks down the stages of how GBV happens and it’s about the victim turning in to a victor and taking back their power. “Sengilula emphakathini” shows just how degrading abuse is in the sense that all power is lost and your power is taken.

“Zizobuya” is more than just a song; it’s a call to action. It’s a testament to Awa’s artistry and her commitment to using her platform to address critical social issues.
