Berita has graced us with another hit. Following her release of Siyathandana, the songbird had released a track from her album Songs in The Key of Love, titled ‘MaKhumalo’ featuring a fellow Bulawayo born artiste, Bekezela.
Released on the 11th of November, MaKhumalo is a love song with Bekezela expressing his love to Berita, with Berita reciprocating the feeling. Sang in vernacular, the track oozes authenticity. Like someone once said, there’s something about being told I love you in vernacular that just hits different. MaKhumalo is the poster child of quality shearing. This is what we call a collaboration. The two rich voices blend marvelously and soothe your heart, mind and soul. The lyrics are gorgeous. How often do you hear the words, “uyisqabhobho, isiqamulamayezi, ufana lelanga liphuma?” You just don’t.
Imagine hearing these words, “Ukuqala kwam ukukubona,/ Amehlo akho angihlaba izinhliziyo,/ Umoya wami wavuma,/ Ukukushela yikwenza nje nje,/ Sengizothumela abomalume,/ Ngobe nguwe umama ekhaya engimkhethileyo.” (This is my first time seeing you,/your eyes pierced my heart,/ my spirit acknowledged,/ courting you is just a formality,/ I’m going to send my uncles,/ because you are my wife that I have chosen.) I would personally melt, amadolo sengaqaqamba. I would personally describe this song as mastery. The simplicity of the whole track is breathtaking.
Putting acoustics to the side and delving into the visuals, I can only say one thing. Aesthetically pleasing. It’s a beautiful visual, owned to the artists and setting. The video features the two talents adorned in Ndebele traditional accessories. They gently serenade each other in a dim room with both their voices and guitars.
MaKhumalo is a jam and a gem, for singletons and lovebirds. Do yourself a favour and listen to it because you will not regret it. Or better yet dedicate it to your loved one named MaKhumalo. Dear future husbands listen to MaKhumalo down below.
