Valentine Tusai has a way of weaving a vivid image around his readers using only simple words. Each and every word and phrase in his poetry was well thought out and intentionally placed to rouse strong feelings. He weaved a web using his poems and I as a reader was a willing victim, ready to go onto the next poem and see what else his book had in store for me.
I found no problems with his book save for the sexual lines and strong language here and there which could ruffle a few feathers, but then again, is art really art if feathers aren’t ruffled a bit?
I also found that the stories he told through his poetry were familiar stories, stories one could deeply understand and relate to making the experience of reading his book that much more intense. There is no surer way to reel your readers in than connecting with them and allowing them to be able to relate to you through your work, and that is exactly what the author did with LIPPA.
Valentine Tusai’s poetry is not the kind of poetry one simply reads and forgets about soon after completing the last stanza, it is the type of poetry which stays in your head, echoing long after you have closed the book, the type of poetry you put up on your status update when you want to seem wise and interesting.
She asked if my poems are true stories. I said no it’s all fiction. . She wondered if the words she read were feelings I felt I lied and said that it’s all creativity. Right now she’s also a poem that’s going to be read by someone else. Who will ask if my poems are true stories. Feelings are universal, poetry is the ink tattooed on my soul. ~ Poetical tattoos, Valentine Tusai
As a person who does not actively read poetry, reading Valentine Tusai’s work was a very pleasant experience, one I recommend everyone must have. I give this book 4/5 stars. Poetry is not a genre I normally read, but this book made the experience enjoyable what more this up and coming author has in store for us. and memorable. I can’t wait to see
