The youth of Zimbabwe are getting in touch with their talents and are ready to show them to the world. Meet Zimbabwean Artist Matthew Garvin; a 25-year-old inspired artist who has a passion for art and all it stands for.

Spreading his work far and wide, Zimbabwean Artist Matthew dabbles in figurative and oil painting in Harare, Zimbabwe as well as the United Kingdom where he is sometimes based. He finds the human body captivating, which is why he aims for each painting to tell a story. Between the two, he indulges more in oil painting as he finds it easier to manipulate. His favorite of art would be Caravaggio’s “St John the Baptist“. He also enjoys the work of Francis Bacon.

He studied Fine Arts at the University of Wolverhampton and has been painting on a professional level for the past 4 years. Through his paintings, he strives to provide a different perspective on the human figure. Ultimately, he aims to bring to light the relationship between the figure and its surroundings. “I try to deal with the unknown, the unexplained and seek to lay bare something ‘other’ through my work. I hope that my work will allow the viewer to not only take a retrospective view of the figures themselves but also provoke an introspection of one’s own self,” he explains.

Whenever Matthew is struggling with inspiration, he often turns to the work of others for motivation mainly on Instagram. He tends to do small sketches to activate his creative process. His advice to anyone else in his field is: “Persistence is key. The art world can feel very overwhelming at times but as long as you keep pushing to get your name out there you will get somewhere with your work.”

For future plans, Matthew Garvin plans to return to the United Kingdom to pursue his Post-Graduate degree.
