Awa Khiwe’s triumphant return to the music scene is nothing short of spectacular. Her latest release ‘Zizobuya’ is a sonic powerhouse that not only delivers a catchy beat but also packs a powerful message against gender-based violence.
The song, a collaborative effort with Ghanaian Stallion, is an infectious blend of rhythm and social commentary. Awa masterfully navigates through the complexities of relationships, cultural expectations, and the devastating impact of abuse.
By drawing a parallel between her previous song, ‘Babakazi’ where she says, “ngizo’tshel’ ubabakazi ngawe… ngizotshel’ ubabakazi kuthi ngekhaya ubekwazi ngawe.” In English it translates to I’ll tell my aunt about you.. I’ll tell my aunt about you so that they know about you. In African tradition when a young woman has found a suitor she is obligated to tell her aunt about the relationship to vet them and in terms of showing that they’re serious about a new phase in their life.
In ‘Zizobuya’ Awa creates a narrative arc that exposes the insidious nature of domestic violence. The journey from hopeful anticipation to heartbreaking betrayal is laid bare with raw honesty. She says, “Bengithi ng’thole isthandwa kwadlula amalanga ngabona ukuthi hay’bo akusekho mnandi ekhaya kwashona ilanga unyamalala.” I thought I found the love of my life until time passed and you wouldn’t come home.
The lyrics are poignant and thought-provoking. Awa’s ability to intertwine traditional African values with contemporary issues is commendable. She challenges societal norms and empowers survivors to reclaim their lives.
“Manje awusaqhambi lamanga ngingakubuza ung’faka isandla” meaning you don’t even lie to me anymore when I ask you, you hit me. This is when the abuser doesn’t even bother lying and just resorts to violence. She really breaks down the stages of how GBV happens and it’s about the victim turning in to a victor and taking back their power. “Sengilula emphakathini” shows just how degrading abuse is in the sense that all power is lost and your power is taken.
“Zizobuya” is more than just a song; it’s a call to action. It’s a testament to Awa’s artistry and her commitment to using her platform to address critical social issues.
Don’t take my word for it. Give it a spin or several because that’s exactly what I’ve done maybe just maybe you’ll get what I’m trying to tell you with this review. The ones that get it get it and the ones that don’t don’t. Congratulations on yet another banger Queen, you’ve done it again. This is a masterpiece! Stream Zizobuya on all music platforms now!
