The debate about #SupportLocalArts is raging again and I wanted to take this time to say that iNgudukazi Magazine is for Bulawayo arts. Since our inception, we have reviewed and interviewed Bulawayo artists, their music, their music videos and movies/film. This content makes up for approximately 50% of our work. Three of our columns are dedicated to the arts namely For the Culture, New Music and Music Video Reviews and we plan to extend these even more as we get more writers.
Maybe let’s start with how and why iNgudukazi was born. I wanted to create a platform for Bulawayo artists to have a home. A publication which celebrates them and showcases them. I had to learn from scratch ukuthi who’s who in the Bulawayo arts scene. My friends were doing the most in the arts and I wanted to prop them up. And 100 articles later, I have made headway to do that.
It hasn’t been easy, I have had Bulawayo artists bluetick me or turn down my interview requests. I’m a Bulawayo artist as well. This publication is a labour of love but I’m trying my best and I know that I can’t do it alone. We have to stand together as artists for this ecosystem to thrive. In addition to this, I can’t write about things which I don’t know so feel free to WhatsApp me and let me know when you’ve seen something cool or you’ve created a masterpiece. I want to hear about it.
