What is spirit? The dictionary definition puts it as the non-physical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character; the soul. In religious terms however, this is said to be the non-physical part of a person regarded as their true self and as capable of surviving physical death or separation. In light of these definitions, this article will address soul ties. Yes soul ties, something which I think is both either misunderstood or taken too lightly. Just so we’re on the same page, I am referring to the “idea” that people can be “bonded” to others by means which they cannot explain. How this comes about is as much a mystery to me as it is you, I’m sure. To the know-it-all readers, feel free to correct my misconceptions in the comments. The aim of this I suppose, is to explore topics and hopefully provide a different perspective.
Probably the most common reference of soul ties comes after sexual encounters. If you’re an active social media user, I’m confident you’d have come across someone warning against having multiple hook ups because “soul ties are real”, or twitter threads detailing their experiences. But how does a sexual encounter leave one’s soul bonded? Let’s explore this idea shall we?
I suppose to get to the answer we need to understand what sex really is. It’s no mystery that perception plays a role in anyone’s relationship with sex. Those of you who view it as something sacred, are unlikely to partake in it as frivolously as those who don’t. However if my understanding of said soul ties is accurate, they don’t discriminate.
So what are they? I’d be damned if I know. Based on the evidence however, it’s possibly safe to define them as the attachment you feel after intimacy. You know what I mean, that ‘thing‘ you feel towards the person you just shared your mind, body and soul with…and there it is…soul. “What do I mean soul?” (I hear you wonder) Simple. I think aside from a few individuals, many of us view nakedness as a state of vulnerability.
That’s the link. Our vulnerable, naked selves. The physical embodiment of our ‘souls’, and having shared that with someone, you grow closer, be it for a short moment, or even a life time. Whatever the length of time, in that instance, you’re bonded, two become one, you lose a piece of yourself and gain that of another; memories, experiences, flaws, fears, scars, all out in the open, for another to see, touch, feel; to experience. Exposed, you’re vulnerable, your ‘soul’ is there for the taking. You experience bliss, you’re bonded, ‘tied’ to your ‘partner’ by an invisible thread.
It’s possible that it’s just our incisive need for human contact, coupled with the desire to understand everything, and hence, ‘soul ties‘ are nothing but an extension of that desire. Or maybe, it’s real, who knows? I certainly don’t, I’m just your friendly neighbourhood internet Nyanga 🙂
