Religious dogma has dominated human civilisations for as far back as we dare to go into history. Fast forward a bit further in time, so called “dominant” theologies started to emerge preaching the existence of “The One True God”, and of course man’s salvation.
I’m sure you’re wondering what the hell my point is, so here’s a question for you, what is your religion?
You’ve probably answered Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, any other belief system or nothing.
Naturally, that’s not the point of my question.
Allow me to reiterate.
How much of your time do you dedicate to your favourite artist? Internet personality? Actor? Or even better yet, celebrity pastor? ( leave a comment if you’d like to read more of my thoughts on the latter).
Why does it matter I hear you ask? Would that energy not be better served, directed towards your favoured deity?
Already, a countless number of our peers spend their time engaging in what can only be coined as “celebrity worship”. I’m sure we’ve all come across the odd ‘stan account’ on twitter for said person, and this group. Admittedly they seem to lean on the obsessive side of the spectrum.
Regardless, we allow the strangest of things to steal our time, and influence our very being. Let’s look at music for instance.
It should come as no surprise that the type of music you listen to can have a resounding effect on you and the perception of your environment, amongst other factors of course. It goes without saying, that these vary.
My point being, how often do we make a conscience effort to listen to what is being said by our favourite artists, as and when we hear it? Why do we feel compelled to defend people who we only know through voices they dub over a rhythm? Or those who tell us what we want to hear? What do you gain from such actions? Why is that more appealing to spending time with our chosen “God”?
In this rare instance, I find myself far removed from such qualms as I’m neither religious nor suffer an attachment to anyone “famous”.
Ultimately my goal is offer a chance at a different perspective.
So I ask again, what is your religion? Who do you worship? Why do you feel such a strong ‘connection’ to these larger than life figures, but fail to offer the same attention to what is arguably more important for the nourishment of your spirit?
