Nothing ruins my day like realising that I’m not really looking great after I’ve just stepped out of the house. The stares—the subtitles, as my friends would call them. The world is quite controversial when it comes to makeup, and when you do it, you have to make sure it’s flawless. “Go big or go home” type of situation. Don’t give the haters another reason to hate on makeup. There’s nothing I hate more than realising mine is not up to standard through someone else’s eyes. I always rush to the mirror to go and check, and boom a flaky forehead—hard to correct or fix—and just like that, my day is ruined! I have had one or too many of such situations this winter and I’ve saved you the trouble of having terrible winter makeup.
But fear not, my fabulous friends. I’ve got the low-down on how to keep our skin glowing and our makeup on point this winter. Let’s dive into this winter skin rescue mission together.
First things first, understanding skin types.
We need to know our skin types. This isn’t just a fun fact; it’s the key to unlocking the perfect winter regimen.
There are like five skin types:
- Normal Skin: You lucky duck! Balanced and happy.
- Dry Skin: If your skin is often flaky and tight, this one’s for you.
- Oily Skin: Shiny and fabulous, but maybe a little too shiny?
- Combination Skin: A delightful mix of both worlds.
- Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated, let’s be gentle.
Remember this, always patch test new products. We don’t want any surprises, trust me on this one.
Girl after identifying your skin type, let’s talk foundation. This is where the magic happens. Choosing the right foundation is key to nailing that flawless look.
For Dry Skin, hydrating foundations are your besties. Look for dewy finishes that make your skin look fresh and alive, my personal favourite, the Black Opal True Color Skin Perfecting Stick Foundation, a bit pricey but totally worth it, you can save up to $20 or you can get that runner to get it for you at Clicks, it lasts for a life time (just kidding) but you totally get me, right?
For Oily Skin, matte foundations will keep that shine in check and make sure your makeup lasts all day, you can try the Avon Color Trend Real Matte, but be careful on picking the shade. matte foundations are difficult to deal with, you can’t blend it until it matches your skin and we don’t want you to waste your money and a good product. do a product test if you can before purchasing such that you get the right shade. This one you can get it from as little as under $10.
For Sensitive Skin, mineral foundations are gentle and perfect for keeping irritation at bay. The L.A Girl Pro Coverage Liquid Foundation comes highly recommended. Not only does it work like a charm on sensitive skin, it is also affordable. It retails for $10, at Dischem.
Bear in mind that winter means dry air and dry air means dry skin. Hydration is the name of the game, so take it from the base and stock up.
Invest in Moisturisers, go for thick creams that really pack a punch, you can try the Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream , it is affordable and a must have. Or rather you can try face oils like the Ponds Perfect Color complex , it will lock in that moisture.
Let’s focus on makeup that not only looks good but feels good too.
Avoid powder blush and invest in a good cream blush, these babies give a lovely dewy finish and blend like a dream. Keep everything locked in place with a hydrating setting spray. Don’t just buy products, check to see if they suit you.
And lastly let’s not forget the self-care! Our skin deserves some pampering too.

Exfoliate weekly, gently scrub away those dead skin cells to reveal the glow beneath. Treat yourself to hydrating masks, your skin will thank you. Drink water like it’s your job, and consider a humidifier to combat that dry indoor air. This is what l do, every Sunday night, l cleanse my face, exfoliate gently, apply a hydrating mask and finish off with a rich moisturiser and facial oil. l must say it’s working out really well for me.
So girl start your own skin care ritual.
There you have it, my glam squad. By understanding our skin types, choosing the right products, and embracing self-care rituals, we can keep our skin glowing and our makeup flawless this winter. Remember, beauty starts with healthy skin. No more ugly stares or terrifying subtitles you are good to go.
