Get your wing on: The easy guide to winged eyeliner

Make it even and bold. You want it to shout, “Look at me!”

winged eyeliner

Hello beauty lovers, if you’re not rocking a winged eyeliner, the ‘cat eye’ as many like to call it, then what are you doing? The winged eye is that fierce statement that says, “I’m here, I’m fabulous, and you better watch out!” So grab your eyeliner, and let me tutor you.

First things first, what you’ll need

  • Eyeliner: So eyeliners come in three forms, gel, liquid, or pencil, you pick what works for you, but for beginners l suggest pencil, it has less drama.
  • Makeup Remover: Because perfection is a process, you need it.
  • Small Brush or Cotton Swabs: For those “oops” moments.
  • Mascara: For that lash enhancement, adding an extra vibe to your winged eye.

Let’s get to it step-by-step

1. Prep

You need to start with a clean slate. Put on some eyeshadow primer to keep your look fierce all the time. Nobody wants a wing that’s drooping halfway through the day.

2. Sketch

Grab that pencil eyeliner and channel your inner self. Start from the outer corner of your eye, angling towards your brow, make dots, creating a triangle back to the outer corner of your eye. There you have it, your blueprint.

3. Line it up

Now you make it official. Whether you go for gel, liquid, or pencil, do your thing. Draw a thin line connecting the tiny dots you created, let it gradually thicken as you reach the wing, the bolder, the better.

4. Fill it up

Now, you fill in that wing like a pro. Make it even and bold. You want it to shout, “Look at me!”

5. Blend

If you are not going for that thin natural look, you must grab a neutral eyeshadow and blend it on your lid. This isn’t just about the wing, it’s about the whole eye looking fly. A little depth never hurt anyone. I personally like a smokey look, so I grab a black eyeshadow and blend it out with a brown one giving that smokey fierce finish.

6. Mascara

Slap on some mascara like it was made for you. We want lashes that say, “World stop.” Get those lashes voluminous, that and the wing are a match made in heaven, always make sure they go together.

7. Clean Up

This is where the magic happens, this is where l define my wing, smudges, unevenness, this is the moment where you perfect everything. Use a cotton swab with makeup remover. Sharp edges are what you’re after, so clean up.

Tips for the perfect winged eyeliner

    • Practice Makes Perfect: The first few attempts might be a hot mess. Keep at it until you’re serving looks like a pro.
    • Tailor to Your Eye Shape: Not every wing looks good on every eye. Find what works for you and own it.
    • Get Creative: Feeling wild? Try coloured liners or even add glitter. I sometimes add glitter or coloured liner on top of my black liner wing, it’s magical.
    • There are many ways to kill a cat: If this does not work for you, you can try using the tap method, though l don’t favour it because it always vexes me when it comes to symmetry.

There you have it beauty lovers, “The Winged Eyeliner” your ticket to instant glam and confidence. Unleash your inner diva, and let those wings fly. You’re not just applying makeup, you’re making a statement. Now get out there and show the world what you are capable of.
